Artists' Statement
Like a lot of us, I don't know WHY I feel the desire to create visually. I think we all have different gifts (art, music, science, math, writing), and even different visual gifts. I think it's instilled in our being by our Creator, and we enrich each other with our gifts. We are facets of a diamond.
I seem to mostly work semi-realistically on two dimensional surfaces. Learning the basic techniques of visual communication, the unending light-dark interplay/design/composition improvement/drawing etc. leads us to the fun stuff, subject, color (whee!!), various media, visual languages and individual voice. I work best when I am responding to something in my outside world, the varieties of light on seasonal landscapes, pets who sleep so obligingly in front of me, our townscapes and activities, and our interiors. I'm just beginning to explore some of these topics.
Artist's Bio
I always drew and painted as a child. My parents arranged for art lessons with a local artist, I took art in high school and majored in Art in college. I worked for 8 years as a book production artist for Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, N.J.
My husband and I were blessed with 3 boys, and we moved to Pennsylvania in 1991. I quilted when they were small, to keep my hand in color and design. When our children grew up a bit, I started drawing and painting again.
Since then, I have read many books, taken workshops and gotten involved with the local art communities. I am grateful to my fellow artists for inspiring and encouraging me. I'm sure my artwork would be much less developed had I not met all of you.
I particularly enjoy oil painting, but also spend a lot of time with watercolors and drawing materials. I use acrylics sometimes too. I am grateful to my viewers, who give me interesting feedback on my work. I intend to work intensively and continue creating fine artwork in my retirement.

Oils.
Painterly. Lush. Textural. Plein Air. Historical. Mary Hickman does it all. A classical artist who learns from art history and also her observations of the outside world.
-
Watercolors.
Many artists use watercolors to prep for more detailed oil paintings later, but watercolors are definitely a finished art medium unto themselves. Mary’s watercolors combine the two. Some are concept ideas for her more detailed oil paintings, but others are truly finished works of art.

Drawing
Most of Mary’s drawings are used to build skills or flesh out details. A good drawing will always be needed for the foundation for any well-developed painting. Mary understands this concept so well. In addition, her love for outside world and observation of the objects and animals she loves is readily apparent in her drawings, whether simple sketches or more detailed finished artwork that is rendered to completion.
