Felicity Sidwell - Landscapes

Felicity Sidwell - Spotlight Gallery April 28 – June 11, 2023

Felicity Sidwell enjoys capturing the colors of the land surrounding her old farmhouse in Gettysburg, PA. It is a rural landscape happily reminiscent of the Hertfordshire village in England where she grew up.

Felicity painted in watercolors while her children were small; she now uses oils and most recently has developed a passion for the immediacy of pastels. She often paints “en plein air” on location, sensitive to the colors and different moods of a landscape under different light effects produced by variations in cloud cover, different times of day and seasons of the year. Always studying and often attending workshops, she constantly strives to improve her art.

Felicity and her husband came to the US in the early 1970’s, settling first in Connecticut, where she attended Silvermine School of Art, studying realistic oil and watercolor painting at a time when abstraction was more in vogue. While in Connecticut, Felicity exhibited in group and solo shows, winning occasional prizes for her watercolors. By the summer of 2000 she was doing weekly outdoor shows with the Eastham Painters Guild on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Returning to oils once her children left home, and moving to Maine in 2007, Felicity joined the Plein Air Painters of Maine, and another group of friends who painted together every Thursday at different locations: the small fishing harbors, sandy beaches, rocky shores and the brilliant autumn yellows and golds of tidal salt marshes. While in Maine Felicity ran her own successful art gallery in a summer cottage perched on the rocks overlooking Casco Bay in the little fishing harbor of West Point, Phippsburg.

In 2016 they moved again, this time to Gettysburg PA to be nearer to grandchildren. Felicity joined the Foundry Art Market and quickly found more plein air painters to work with. She paints and exhibits with the Mountain Valley Plein Air Painters, the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters, and another group of Thursday painters from the Hanover Area Arts Guild. She is also a member of the American Impressionist Society, CALC in Carlisle and the Adams County Arts Council where she will have a solo show in November 2023.
